New NWI Website Unveiled

Region Real Estate Values Going Up

Pence in South Bend Tomorrow Morning

Indiana Governor-elect Mike Pence will be in the region tomorrow to thank Hoosiers, one month to the day after the election. According to the press release, Pence will be in South Bend tomorrow at 8am, at Top Notch Diner, located at 23530 State Road 2. Pence says he looks forward to the tremendous honor of being Indiana's 50th Governor, and meeting Hoosiers to discuss ways to keep Indiana moving on a, “pathway to success over the next four years.”

New IN Rules to be a Teacher or Principal

By a nine-to-two vote today the Indiana Board of Education has changed the eligibility requirements to be a teacher or principal. The Times reports a new “adjunct teacher permit” allows anyone with a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 grade point average, who can pass a subject test, can immediately teach that subject, and that a bachelor's degree will now suffice to be a principal in Indiana, along with at least two-years teaching experience and completion of a training program in administration. Authorities Dealing with 2 Separate Crashes

Authorities are asking motorists to avoid two trouble spots this evening. State Road 2 is closed due to a crash, east of I-65, a little past the truck stop, and motorists traveling on southbound I-65 heading toward Hebron should get off at the Crown Point exit, U.S. 231 east toward Hebron. Also authorities say State Road 130 is closed due to a crash near State Road 149 in Wheeler that reportedly occurred just after five this evening.

Nine Span Bridge Contract Awarded

An almost 18-million dollar contract was awarded today to replace the Nine Span Bridge in Hammond over the railroad yards. INDOT Spokesman Matt Deitchley says the contract was awarded to Dunnet Bay Construction of Glendale Heights, Illinois, and that the demolition work could begin as soon as the end of the month or early January. Rensselaer Woman Killed in Crash

In Wheatfield Tuesday evening, authorities say a 64-year-old Rensselaer woman was pronounced dead at the scene after a two-vehicle crash on State Road 10, about a half-mile east of County Road 350 West. The Jasper County Sheriffs Department says Gloria Jones had to be extricated by Wheatfield Fire Rescue Units, and was taken by ambulance to a landing zone near Kankakee Valley High School to meet with a Medivac helicopter when rescue crews determined Jones had succumbed to her injuries. Valpo PD Investigating Thefts from Vehicles

Valparaiso Police are investigating numerous reports of thefts from vehicles that occurred early Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the areas of Shaker Dr., Eisenhower Ave., Hollandale Dr., Flemming Rd., Penwick Dr. and Truman Ave for vehicles that had windows broken with items missing from them. A total of 10 thefts were reported in these areas.

Where in Valparaiso is the giant Santa? The city reports you can find the Vintage Santa Claus again this year at Foundation Meadows on Campbell. WARSAW, Ind. (Dec. 4, 2012) - Micro Machine Company, LLC, an orthopedic medical device manufacturer, announced plans today to establish a new manufacturing facility here, creating up to 60 new jobs by 2015.

Porter Co to Get Funds for Food Shelter Programs

Emergency food and shelter programs in Porter County will soon be receiving over 22-thousand dollars in federal funds. The United Way of Porter County reports 22-thousand-158 dollars has been awarded to supplement those programs, with a local board determining how the funds will be awarded in order to expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around Porter County.

Sentencing in the case of a Chicago man found guilty last month in the July 2011 death of a Schereville woman has been delayed for one week. An incident on State Road 10, near Wheatfield, in Jasper County, has authorities asking motorist to avoid that are for the next few hours. Callers reported the incident around five this afternoon, and stated that it took place by the Kankakee Valley Church, just east of the high school. No further information is available at this time.
