Woman Found Dead in Gary Traffic Stop

A death investigation is underway after Gary Police find a woman dead in the passenger seat of a vehicle during a traffic stop Thursday night at a mini mart at 25th and Harrison Street. Nwi-dot-com this morning says the car had significant front-end damage and the driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while a child also in the car was found to be unharmed. The Times also reports that police do not suspect foul play.

Porter Co Man Pleads Guilty in Wife's Death

A Chesterton-area man has pleaded guilty, reports say, to killing his estranged wife in April of last year, allegedly shooting her multiple times with a high-powered semiautomatic rifle at an herbal shop she owned on US 6 in Portage. The Times says 56-year-old Fredrick Cashner Jr faces a minimum sentence of 45 years in prison. A Porter County judge is expected to decide in early January whether to accept the plea agreement.

The Region Remembers Pearl Harbor

pearl Today is Pearl Harbor Day. At 7:55 a.m. on December 7, 1941, nearly 200 Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The raid, which lasted little more than one hour, left nearly 3,000 dead. Nearly the entire U.S. Pacific Fleet was at anchor there and few ships escaped damage.

Region Cheer Teams Score in National Competition

Some area girls in the region are celebrating their recent accomplishments in a nationwide cheer competition that took place earlier this week in Orlando, Florida. Pop Warner Cheer Coordinator Patti Jo Hamiliton says the South County Pop Warner program, made up of 12 third-through-6th grade girls, from LaCrosse, South Central, Wanatah, and Westville schools, placed ninth in the nation out of 16 teams on Tuesday. Gary's Marquette Park Pavilion Ceremony

The public is invited to the official grand opening of the Marquette Park Pavilion next week in Gary. City officials say the pavilion is one of the newest community development projects, and is part of the estimated 28-million dollar restoration of Marquette Park, funded by the Regional Development Authority. A 66-year old Dyer man has been medevaced to an area hospital with injuries received when his car went into the path of a train in an unincorporated area near Dyer. Sgt. Traffic Stop Finds 6 Lbs Alleged Marijuana

In Gary Wednesday evening, Indiana State Police say a traffic stop for a seatbelt violation at 19th and Hayes Street led to the discovery of six pounds of marijuana in a vehicle. Cline Extension Demolition Continues

Demolition work that started in May of this year continues on the Cline Avenue extension bridge in East Chicago. Indiana Department of Transportation Spokesman Matt Deitchley says the work should be complete by the end of this year. The bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal was closed for safety reasons three years ago. Earlier this year, officials announced it would be replaced by a new toll bridge built with private funds.

Indiana Governor-elect Mike Pence will be in the region tomorrow to thank Hoosiers, one month to the day after the election. According to the press release, Pence will be in South Bend tomorrow at 8am, at Top Notch Diner, located at 23530 State Road 2. Pence says he looks forward to the tremendous honor of being Indiana's 50th Governor, and meeting Hoosiers to discuss ways to keep Indiana moving on a, “pathway to success over the next four years.”

New IN Rules to be a Teacher or Principal

By a nine-to-two vote today the Indiana Board of Education has changed the eligibility requirements to be a teacher or principal. The Times reports a new “adjunct teacher permit” allows anyone with a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 grade point average, who can pass a subject test, can immediately teach that subject, and that a bachelor's degree will now suffice to be a principal in Indiana, along with at least two-years teaching experience and completion of a training program in administration. Authorities Dealing with 2 Separate Crashes

Authorities are asking motorists to avoid two trouble spots this evening. State Road 2 is closed due to a crash, east of I-65, a little past the truck stop, and motorists traveling on southbound I-65 heading toward Hebron should get off at the Crown Point exit, U.S. 231 east toward Hebron. Also authorities say State Road 130 is closed due to a crash near State Road 149 in Wheeler that reportedly occurred just after five this evening.

Nine Span Bridge Contract Awarded

An almost 18-million dollar contract was awarded today to replace the Nine Span Bridge in Hammond over the railroad yards. INDOT Spokesman Matt Deitchley says the contract was awarded to Dunnet Bay Construction of Glendale Heights, Illinois, and that the demolition work could begin as soon as the end of the month or early January.
