Class Basketball May Be On the Ballot

Class basketball in Indiana could get a statewide vote. Oldenberg State Senator Jean Leising has introduced Senate Bill 320, a measure that would put on the ballot, for the 2014 general election, the question of whether the Indiana high school basketball tournament should be played under a single class system. Funeral Services for Mirko Jurkovic, Former ND Star

Visitation is today in Granger, Indiana, for Mirko Jurkovic, a consensus All-American offensive guard for the University of Notre Dame football team in 1991 and a monogram-winner on the 1988 Irish national championship squad. Officials say he died Wednesday evening in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka after a battle with cancer. Jurkovich, a originally from Calumet City, was 42.

Indiana Flu Deaths Reportedly Up to 15

Indianapolis media reporting the number of flu deaths in Indiana went up by five since the state's most recent update earlier this week... citing information from a state health official. That means fifteen deaths at this point in the flu season in Indiana. Two of the most recent deaths were reportedly in long-term care facilities.

SUV Crashes Through Porter Twp Home

Three people were hospitalized after an SUV crashed through a Portage Township home and into a room where an infant girl and her parents were asleep. The Porter County Sheriff's Office reports the infant was taken to an area hospital to be checked out, while the driver of the SUV, 33 year old Joseph Tanner, of Portage, and his passenger, were taken to Hobart St. Mary's, with non life-threatening injuries. Former Notre Dame Player Dies of Cancer

Multiple media outlets today report a former Notre Dame consensus All-American offensive guard from the Fighting Irish's 1988 National Championship team died Wednesday night of cancer in Indiana. Mirko Jurkovic, a native of Calumet City, Illinois, is survived by his wife and three children, and a funeral service is scheduled for Saturday.

Missing NE Indiana Boy Found Years Later in MN

Authorities say a northeastern Indiana boy abducted by his paternal grandparents back in 1994 has been found, married and well, in Minnesota. Flu Deaths Climb to 10 in Indiana

The flu has claimed three more lives in Indiana, according to the latest information from state health officials. The weekly influenza report says there have been ten reported influenza deaths in the 2012-2013 season, two under the age of 18. The Indiana State Department of Health does not report the number of deaths in a county until five deaths have occurred in a specific county.

Cline Avenue Bridge Demolition Update

The Cline Avenue extension bridge is gone. The Times today says explosives brought down the last of it this week, as crews have been working for the last few months to demolish the nearly thirty-year-old bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, which was closed on an emergency basis for safety reasons just over three years ago. Fatal Accident in Gary

The Lake County Coroners office this morning reports a Gary man suffered fatal injuries in a motor-vehicle-versus pedestrian accident at 4th and Broadway in Gary. Authorities say 36-year-old Will Watson was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma shortly after 11:30 last night at a local hospital.

Region's NIRPC Wins National Award

Region planners have won a national award. The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission's 2040 Comprehensive Regional Plan will receive the prestigious 2013 Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan from the American Planning Association. The association says NIRPC's plan represents the first broad planning initiative covering multiple counties – Lake, Porter and La Porte Counties – while focusing on a variety of issues, including transportation, land use and the environment.

Crime in Hammond Down 6% in 2012

Crime in Hammond is down six-percent overall from the previous year. Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller reports crime statistics for 2012 show decreases in every major category except robberies, which were up by seven cases; felony assaults, which increased by 141 cases; and arson, of which there were seven more incidents in 2012, then the previous year. Grass Fire on I-94 in Portage Area

Fire crews are currently on the scene of a grass fire at the I-94 and State Road 249/Crisman Road interchange.   Drivers can expect gaper slowdowns according to several traffic tipsters.  INDOT is reporting that the northbound ramp on SR-249 is blocked at this time.

Man Shot After Giving Another Man a Ride

A man was shot after giving another man a ride earlier this morning. Corporal Gabrielle King, of the Gary Police Department, says around 3:30, an unknown subject offered 18 year old Montreal McNutt money for a ride while he was at a gas station, located at 49th and Broadway, in Gary.  Corporal King says the man asked to go to one location, and then changed the location, and when they arrived, the man got out of the vehicle, and allegedly fired a couple of gunshots at McNutt, which struck him....

Power Restored near Lakes of the Four Seasons

Part of Randolph Street was closed earlier today after a crash involving a utility pole at 121st and Randolph near Lakes of the Four Seasons. At about 9-o'clock this morning, Kankakee Valley REMC reports an automobile accident caused significant damage to the pole. The rural electric membership cooperative says for the safety of their crews, as they replaced the pole and made necessary line repairs.
