Accident Shuts Down I65 in Lake County

No details are available at this hour, but southbound Interstate 65 in the Hobart/Merrillville area was shutdown early today just before 61st Avenue.  The delays were extending back as far north as the Ridge Road exit.  The crash reportedly involved an overturned semi and at least one other vehicle.

'Nose Doctor' Malpractice Suit Upheld

The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld another medical malpractice judgment against the former so-called Merrillville “nose doctor”. Mark Weinberger was sentenced last October to seven years in federal prison for health care fraud. Officials say Weinberger fled the country in 2004, and was found on a mountainside in Italy about five years later. He is reported to be incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correction Center in Chicago.

A 32 year old man was hospitalized early this morning after being shot in Gary. Gary Police Corporal Gabrielle King says the man told police he was in the 42-hundred block of Harrison Street and got out of his vehicle, when two men approached and began to fight with him. Corporal King says the man  told police he fought back, when one of the men pulled out a weapon and shot him. Indiana Offender Mistakenly Released from Illinois

The Indiana Department of Corrections announced today the mistaken release of an offender from authorities in Chicago. The I-D-O-C reports 44 year old Steven Robbins, who was born in Gary, and was serving a 50 year sentence for murder and carrying a handgun without a license out of Marion County, Indiana, was released from the Indiana State Prison on a court order on Tuesday to the Cook County Circuit Court on a detainer for possession of a controlled...

Nurse at Retirement Home Arrest for Theft

A licensed practical nurse is facing several preliminary felony charges after being arrested Tuesday for theft. Indiana State Police, Bremen Post, reports they were notified that a resident of a nursing home in Plymouth had discovered one of their credit cards missing. Authorities then tracked down several purchases made in Plymouth and the surrounding area, and an investigation led them to a 26 year old Lakeville woman. State Police report the woman was also in possession of prescription medication that belonged to another resident of the facility.

Home Invasion in Gary

The Times reports three masked men with guns forced their way into an elderly man's home in Gary Wednesday evening. Published reports say a boy knocked on the 72 year old man's door, asking for his 15 year old nephew, in the 23-hundred block of Central Avenue, just after 7pm, and shortly after letting the boy in, the three masked men with guns entered. The Times reports the 72 year old was treated for a cut after being struck in the head by the suspects, and no injuries were reported to the boy...

Four Arrested in Portage Drug Raid

Four Portage residents were arrested and a three-year old boy removed from the residence by Child Protective Services after a drug raid. Lake County Sheriffs Police say a third person in a vehicle that crashed into trees in the four-thousand block of Monroe Street during a pursuit in Gary Wednesday, killing two others in the car, died overnight. Third Person Dies After Gary Crash

Lake County Sheriffs Police say a third person in a vehicle that crashed into trees in the four-thousand block of Monroe Street during a pursuit in Gary Thursday, killing two others in the car, died overnight. The third individual was airlifted from a local hospital to the Chicago-area and has not yet been identified. Demolition work got underway in Gary today [Wednesday, Jan. 30] on several buildings adjacent to the Indiana University Northwest campus south of 35th Avenue. Boil Order Issued for Lake Station

A boil water order was issued for all customers of Lake Station water this morning.  Don Vaughn, Lake Station Public Works/Water, tells the Region News Team that there's a break in the main line from Indiana-American Water that comes into the city of Lake Station.  All customers are directed to boil all water used for cooking and drinking at least five minutes before using until further notified.

A Region lawmaker puts the brakes on his specialty license plate bill, temporarily. House Bill 1279 by Valparaiso lawmaker Ed Soliday seeks to limit the number of plates that are available. Soliday delayed a committee vote after a more far-reaching amendment was proposed to block any group that's already had their plate revoked from getting another one. More Dogs May Have Escaped Lake Co Fire

There's now hope that more dogs may have escaped a house fire in Lake County that killed as many as six other dogs, including champion showdogs and fosters from rescue groups. Fire crews from Lake Ridge, Griffith and Merrillville responded to the 16-hundred block of Elm Street in Calumet Township Monday night. Authorities say no humans were hurt . There's a new town councilman in Cedar Lake -- former councilman Greg Wornhoff. Wornhoff, a former town council president, was chosen in a Republican caucus to replace former third-district councilman Dale Poston, who recently resigned.
