80 years in Prison for Choate

A 40 year old Hammond man was sentenced to 80 years in prison today in the death of his son in 2009. The Times reports Riley Choate had pleaded guilty last month to felony neglect of a dependent causing death, two felony counts of moving a body after death, and depriving his daughter of an education. According to CBS Chicago, the body of 13 year old Christian Choate was found in May of 2011, buried under a shed in the Black Oak mobile home park where the family once lived. Online Fingerprint Rule for Gun Permits Starts Monday

The Porter Co. Sheriff’s Department wants the public to know that as of January 14, 2013 everyone that lives in unincorporated Porter Co., and is applying for a gun permit, must have their fingerprints submitted electronically by L1 Solutions.
Once an applicant applies online with the state they must complete the next two steps in any order within 30 days. Both steps must be completed but it doesn’t matter which is done first.

Woman Shot in Hammond Expected to Recover

A 22 year old woman is expected to recover after being shot at home in Hammond Thursday night. The Times reports police were called out to the two-hundred block of Condit Street on a report of shots fired at a residence. Published reports say the woman was taken to a Chicago-area hospital, after being shot in the abdomen. According to the article, witnesses reported there were two possible male subjects, and an investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact Hammond Police.

Crews will be patching potholes and smoothing rough pavement during overnight hours. This will be a mobile operation. Work will be rescheduled if weather becomes a factor.

Visitation is today in Granger, Indiana, for Mirko Jurkovic, a consensus All-American offensive guard for the University of Notre Dame football team in 1991 and a monogram-winner on the 1988 Irish national championship squad. Officials say he died Wednesday evening in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka after a battle with cancer. Jurkovich, a originally from Calumet City, was 42.

Indianapolis media reporting the number of flu deaths in Indiana went up by five since the state's most recent update earlier this week... citing information from a state health official. SUV Crashes Through Porter Twp Home

Three people were hospitalized after an SUV crashed through a Portage Township home and into a room where an infant girl and her parents were asleep. The Porter County Sheriff's Office reports the infant was taken to an area hospital to be checked out, while the driver of the SUV, 33 year old Joseph Tanner, of Portage, and his passenger, were taken to Hobart St. Mary's, with non life-threatening injuries.
