Whiting fire crews were still looking for and fighting hotspots Monday at a century-old building at 119th and Sheridan that burned Sunday night, displacing several residents who lived in apartments in the three-story structure. The building also housed a dress shop. The cause has not yet been determined. There were no reports of injuries.

Wind Chill Advisory in Effect for the Region

A wind chill advisory is in effect from the National Weather Service through 10 am Tuesday morning.  Wind Chills of between 15 degrees below zero and 25 degrees below zero are possible in the Region and Chicagoland vicinity.  The weather service urges people to limit any outdoor activity and reminds everyone that frostbite can occur to exposed skin in 30 minutes.

Strong Turnaround in the Indiana Housing Market

The monthly Indiana Real Estate Markets Report today released by the state’s REALTORS® also provides year-end data which shows that 2012 was a strong turnaround year for Indiana housing markets.
Statewide, there were 8,531 more homes sold in 2012 than in 2011 – a 14.7 percent increase year-over-year. The median price of all 66,516 homes sold in Indiana last year was $118,000, which is 4.5 percent more than the median price of all homes sold in 2011 ($112,900). Fire Crews in Whiting Work Into the Night

In downtown Whiting, part of 119 Street was still closed this morning after fire breaks out Sunday evening in a three-story building at 119th and Sheridan, displacing several residents. The building houses a dress shop and several apartments. There was no word of any injuries. Fire crews were reportedly still on scene this morning, putting out and looking for hot spots. No word on possible cause at this hour.

Gun Permit Procedures Changing in Valpo

News Release (Jan 21 2013):  Beginning Monday February 4th the Valparaiso Police Department's gun permit procedures will be changing. On Monday gun permit applicants will first be required to apply online for a gun permit and within 30 days schedule an appointment at L1 Solutions to be electronically fingerprinted.

Residents of several apartments were reportedly displaced Sunday evening after fire broke out in a nearly one-hundred year old building in downtown Whiting. Fire crews were still on scene hours after getting the call Sunday. There were no immediate reports of injuries. No Injuries Reported in Whiting Building Fire

No injuries were reported after a fire this afternoon in Whiting. The Times reports the fire occurred in a three-story building, located on the 14-hundred block of 119th Street, which housed a dress business on the first floor and apartments on the second floor. Published reports say the fire began after 4pm this afternoon and the Red Cross was assisting displaced residents. No further information is available at this time.

Motorists using I-80/94 and I-65 will have to deal with overnight lane restrictions next week. INDOT reports starting Monday through Friday, crews will be out patching potholes, smoothing rough pavement, and that work will be rescheduled if the weather becomes a factor.
