Highland Community Enforcement Zone Results

During a four hour period on Friday evening the Highland, Griffith and Munster police departments joined resources in the Violence Reduction Initiative.  According to published reports, nearly 50 traffic stops took place in the target zone; Ridge Road between Colfax and Cline Avenue.  Highland police report the stops resulted in 4 arrests one for a traffic violation and three for narcotics in addition, 14 citations and 35 warnings were issued.  Police say they will continue to investigate the na...

Region Road Work to Resume Overnight

The Indiana Department of Transportation says scheduled road work for the overnight last night on I-80/94 in Lake and Porter Counties was canceled for the safety of their workers due to the extreme cold . Pothole patching scheduled for overnight tonight , east and westbound on 80-94 between I-65 in Gary and State Road 249 in Portage, (Tuesday night – Wednesday morning) and on I-65 between the Borman and US 30 this Wednesday and Thursday night is dependent on the weather.

College Shooting in Texas this Afternoon

Multiple shots have reportedly been fired on the campus of Lone Star College near Houston, Texas this afternoon.  ABC News is reporting two people are in the hospital in serious condition with multiple gunshot injuries.  Police says one person of interest is in custody and another suspect is being sought.  Witnesses report the shooting may have started as a fight.  The school has reportedly been evacuated with several police units and SWAT teams still at the scene.

Ball State Doesn't Renew 7 Charter Schools

Ball State has announced they are not renewing seven charter schools in Indiana – including two in Lake County: Charter School of the Dunes and LEAD (leed) College Preparatory Charter School, both in Gary. The others are in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Richmond.

One Lane Open EB Ind Toll Rd @ MC

10:27am -- Indiana State Police at the Toll Road report one lane of the eastbound Indiana Toll Road in La Porte County is open after an earlier crash. Authorities say one person had to be cut out of his vehicle, but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.  The accident had been blocking the eastbound Indiana Toll Road at Exit 39, which is the Michigan City/ US 421 Exit.

Cause Not Yet Known in Whiting Fire

Fire crews battle a blaze at 119th and Sheridan in downtown Whiting Sunday night (Photo by Carole Brozovich)
Whiting fire crews were still looking for and fighting hotspots Monday at a century-old building at 119th and Sheridan that burned Sunday night, displacing several residents who lived in apartments in the three-story structure. The building also housed a dress shop. The cause has not yet been determined. There were no reports of injuries.

Wind Chill Advisory in Effect for the Region

A wind chill advisory is in effect from the National Weather Service through 10 am Tuesday morning.  Wind Chills of between 15 degrees below zero and 25 degrees below zero are possible in the Region and Chicagoland vicinity.  The weather service urges people to limit any outdoor activity and reminds everyone that frostbite can occur to exposed skin in 30 minutes.

The monthly Indiana Real Estate Markets Report today released by the state’s REALTORS® also provides year-end data which shows that 2012 was a strong turnaround year for Indiana housing markets.
Statewide, there were 8,531 more homes sold in 2012 than in 2011 – a 14.7 percent increase year-over-year. Fire Crews in Whiting Work Into the Night

In downtown Whiting, part of 119 Street was still closed this morning after fire breaks out Sunday evening in a three-story building at 119th and Sheridan, displacing several residents. The building houses a dress shop and several apartments. There was no word of any injuries. Fire crews were reportedly still on scene this morning, putting out and looking for hot spots. No word on possible cause at this hour.
