MLK Drive Bridge Litigation Resolved

Those involved in the litigation over the cause of the closure of the Martin Luther King Drive Bridge over the Borman Expressway have agreed to resolve the claims. INDOT today announced contractor Superior Construction Company, it designer, and primary material supplier, have agreed to a negotiated settlement which has the three paying INDOT a total of one-point-thee-five million dollars. Schererville PD Investigating Vehicle Break-ins

Schererville Police are investigating some vehicle thefts after police were dispatched to the 31-hundred block of Wimbledon Drive at 4:45 this morning. Police report officers found the complainant’s vehicle had their window shattered, but a search of the area came up empty. Northbound I-65 Backing Up

The left lane of the on-ramp to westbound Borman (80/94) from northbound I-65 is blocked to a car reportedly in the ditch on the south side of the ramp.  INDOT  reports that the lane may be blocked for about 40-minutes.  Drivers northbound on I-65 should expect delays starting north of 45th Avenue and approaching the 295 Exit.

Murder Suspect Surrenders Thursday Night

Online reports this morning say a murder suspect surrendered peacefully to police, after allegedly holding four people hostage in Gary for four hours last night. Indiana DNR News Release: There are many ways to recycle Christmas trees, but tossing them on a frozen lake to create fish habitat may not be the best idea … and may require a permit from the DNR.

Former Pastor Cites Health Issues

Published reports today say the former pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond cites stress, depression, and other health issues in a new court filing requesting a sentence of less than the mandatory minimum ten year prison sentence. A plea agreement was announced in September, after 55-year-old Jack Schaap was charged in federal court with interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. Man gets 45 years for in Death of his Estranged Wife

A 56 year old man who pleaded guilty last month to murdering his estranged wife at her Portage business was sentenced today to 45 years in prison. The Times reports Frederick Cashner Junior received the minimum time called for in a plea agreement, which does not allow him to appeal the judgment, but that he is eligible to reduce his sentence by more than half. Center Twp Man Gets 4 years for Killing Motorcyclist

A 61 year old Center Township man was sentenced today to four years in prison and four years probation for driving drunk and hitting a motorcycle, which killed the driver. Hammond Councilman Hurt in Crash this Morning

In Hammond just before 8-o'clock this morning, just blocks from the police station, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller tells us a car struck a building, and says the driver was conscious, taken to a local hospital, and they believe a medical condition may be involved. The Times reports the driver was 45 year old Hammond City Councilman Anthony Higgs, and that he appeared ill at the scene.

Armed Robbery at Portage Steak n' Shake

Portage Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred this morning at Steak n' Shake on U.S. Highway 6. Police say both suspects were wearing masks, with one displaying a knife and the other brandishing a handgun. Authorities report the incident took place after 4:30 this morning, and the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money. Man Dies After Falling Through Ice at Wolf Lake

Authorities say a man died after falling through the ice at Wolf Lake in Hammond Wednesday night. Police Chief Brian Miller says the subject, whose identity has not yet been released, was ice skating on Wolf Lake near the old Illiana Yacht Club building, off Wolf Lake near the Indiana Toll Road.  The Hammond Fire Department Dive Team was able to free the man and bring him out, but Chief Miller says he was in the water for at least 20 minutes, and was unable to be resuscitated.

In Hammond this morning, just blocks from the police station, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller tells us just before 8-o'clock this morning a car struck the Calumet Tap in the 5200 block of Calumet Avenue.
