Authorities are warning of a scam circulating directed toward the elderly. The Lake County Sheriff's Office reports a male subject calls seniors, identifies himself as a member of the Sheriff's Office and advises the citizen they have an active warrant out for their arrest. The scammer also states the citizen has missed their court date and gives them the amount of a fine that is due, requesting the citizen purchase a VISA Green Dot credit/gift card for a specific amount and to call him back so he can have the code on the reverse side of the card.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office reports there is never an occasion when they would do this, as all payments for bonds or court fines are paid in-person to the Lake County Clerk's Office. Anyone who receives a call of this nature is asked to report it to the Sheriff's Department at 755-3334 or Detective Biter at 755-3346.
