The Portage Township Food Pantry is expressing their appreciation to a local physician and North Shore Health Centers for their recent donations, which they say will help client families this holiday season. Margaret Hamstrom, Publicity Chairperson of the Portage Township Food Pantry, reports North Shore donated one-hundred hams and several dozen toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste to them, while Doctor Tom Galouzis recently donated 600 turkeys to be handed out to clients.
Hamstrom says North Shore Health Centers, which has offices in both Portage and Lake Station, works to serve the health needs of lower income families at reduced rates, and that a representative from the health center is available at the food pantry on Friday mornings to answer questions. The pantry is currently in need of cereal and baby food, as well as personal hygiene items, which clients are unable to purchase with food stamps. Donations will be accepted on the first, third, and fourth Fridays of each month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the pantry which is located in the back of Neighbors New Vista Educational Opportunities Center at 5391 Central Avenue in Portage.
