Whiting Downsizing City Council Membership

The city council in this far north Lake County community is downsizing, as the number of council members will drop by two by the time the next municipal election comes around in about two years. The Whiting City Council recently voted to cut their membership from seven to five. Whiting City Council President Chris Sarvanidis says the move will save the city money, and put them more in line with other similarly-sized communities.  "I looked at as many of the less than ten-thousand population communities as I could using IACT data and other sources, and I found that over 90-percent of those with less than ten-thousand population do have five council members." IACT stands for Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.
Sarvanidis says a couple years ago the state legislature amended code, allowing communities with less than ten-thousand population to reduce their council membership if it applied to them. US Census figures put Whiting's population at just under five-thousand, making it much smaller than most towns in Lake County. Councilman Sarvanidis added Whiting's a 'small town', " it's one of those everybody knows everybody. In the end we really have five, or if you will, seven councilmen at large because anybody can approach anybody, as you see people throughout town, or know through family and friends, so really every councilman represents everybody".
Currently, Whiting has five districts and two at-large seats, and in the 2015 election, residents will be voting for three district council members and two at-large seats.
The city's website says Whiting incorporated as a town in 1895, then became a city in 1903.
