A man was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital just before 11:30 this morning for a severe injury to his left arm, which had been caught in a conveyor belt. Portage Fire Chief Tom Fieffer says they were dispatched just before 10 this morning to Frick Services, in the eight-hundred block of Sun Drive, at the Port of Indiana, for a report of a man trapped in a fertilizer elevator. Chief Fieffer says they had to extricate the man, whose name has not yet been released, from the conveyor system, which took about an hour and fifteen minutes. Chief Fieffer says they activated the Porter County Technical Rescue Team, of which seven members came out, and the manpower required by the fire department for this incident caused them to strike a first alarm.
