Today, Governor Mike Pence signed the child labor laws bill, SB 153, which would exempt a child who is employed or works as a youth athletic program referee, umpire, or official from the state's child labor law. Pence was joined by thirteen-year-old Matthew Burkart, of Newburgh, who worked with State Senators on the bill. Burkart wanted to work as a soccer referee a year ago, but couldn't because Indiana Soccer officials stopped using 12- and 13-year olds once they learned that hiring them would be illegal.
