Fire at LaPorte County Jail Sends One Inmate to Hospital

A fire Thursday afternoon at the LaPorte County Jail resulted in one inmate being taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation. The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office reports employees were alerted to a fire just before 1pm in a cell located in the south side of the jail. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and inmates in the immediate cell block area were relocated to another secure area within the jail as firefighters ventilated the area. 35 year old Marzano Shelly, of Michigan City, who was being held in the jail while awaiting trial for murder, robbery, and other charges, was taken to Indiana University Health, in LaPorte. No other inmates were injured, and the jail was not evacuated.
