We have to work very hard to raise funds. It is not easy but we do it for the animals. And for all of us working to save animals’ lives, it’s hard to fathom that so many animals are not wanted or are intentionally mistreated or are victims of violence.    It is for those animals that we do what we do and I know that is why you help us.   We work hard to see that all of the animals are well taken care of while they remain at our shelter and then we work as hard to find them responsible and loving forever homes.   Our purpose is to do whatever we can to protect defenseless animals from humans who do not care for them and look upon them as disposable items, or who would cause them pain or suffering.  That is our mission!   You help us make a difference in our Humane Society. Thank you!!   Humane Society Northwest Indiana 6100 Melton Rd. Independent Cat Society Awarded Grant

From the Independent Cat Society: Recently, the Independent Cat Society (ICS) of Westville, Indiana, was selected to receive a grant from the Porter County Community Foundation (PCCF) in the amount of $5,000.  Most of the grants that the ICS receives have arrived by mail, but the Grant Committee representatives at the Porter County Community Foundation wanted to deliver this check in person.  And the ICS staff was glad they did! The ICS has an important partnership with both Porter and LaPorte Counties in helping to reduce pet over-population by providing low-cost spay neuter options and promoting responsible pet-ownership. Additionally, ICS has trained volunteers who provide Trap/Neuter/Release services in areas of high feral cat concentrations.

Pictured:  Emily Remster, Porter Country Community Foundation, hands Independent Cat Society (ICS) shelter cat, Garfield, a check for $5,000 to assist with low-cost spay/neuters.  [Photos provided]
Of course, Garfield had to admit that he didn’t know how to read or sign checks, so Grant Chair, Roberta Jocius and Board President,  Staci Treckles helped him out.  Here they are, pictured with Ms. Remster and Ms. Jackie Stutzman, who is also on the PCCF Board.
The generosity of the PCCF grant will help the ICS spay and neuter more cats in the region, so that more cats can live fuller and happier lives, rather than worrying about being in a community that is overpopulated.  This grant will also help the ICS assist low-income families and pet owners in Porter County live better lives together with their pets. It’s a win for all sides!
Since 1976, the Independent Cat Society (ICS) has successfully operated a non-profit, cage-less, no-kill cat shelter.  Its mission is to promote the welfare of all animals, especially cats, by: preventing cruelty to animals and promoting responsible pet ownership; reducing pet over-population and educating the community on animal welfare issues; providing low-cost Spay/Neuter and Trap/Neuter/Release Programs; and sheltering cats and kittens while they await adoption.  For more information about the Independent Cat Society, or if you’d like to donate, please call 219-785-4936 or visit the ICS on the web at
