Work was set to get underway today on an improvement project along a major east-west corridor in downtown Gary. Indiana Department of Transportation Spokesman Matt Deitchley says it'll involve about a five-mile stretch of Fourth and Fifth avenues... from about a mile east of I-65, where US 12-20 are a single highway before they split again and turn into 4th and 5th avenues... to about three-and-a-half miles west of the interstate near Bridge Street. Deitchley says the work will include pavement replacement, resurfacing and new traffic signals. Work is expected to be complete on 4th Avenue by this December. Work on 5th Avenue will be complete in August 2013. US 12 and 20 are named 4th and 5th Avenues through that corridor.
