A letter is going out to the gubernatorial candidates urging them not to miss the boat with high-speed passenger rail service in Indiana. Tim Maloney, senior policy director for the Hoosier Environmental Council says high-speed rail has multiple benefits including reduced dependence on oil. Once environmental and engineering studies for the Chicago-to-Cincinnati corridor are complete, Indiana would be eligible for federal high-speed rail grants that pay as much as 80-percent of capital costs. Maloney says the basic infrastructure--Amtrak's lines--are already in place but they would need to be enhanced for 110-miles-per-hour trains.
