Fatal Shooting in Gary; Anti-Violence Pgm Monday

Police in Gary are investigating a fatal shooting Friday. Reports say the victim, identified as 35-year-old Omari Barnes, suffered multiple gunshot wounds in an apparent homicide at his home in the 4000 block of West 19th Avenue. A Chicago pastor on a coast-to-coast walk to raise funds for a new community center to help fight violence in his neighborhood, stopped in Gary on his way to Chicago Friday and after hearing of the shooting the Post-Tribune says he spoke with residents in the area.

Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram, with the support of Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, is enlisting the help of the city's churches in reducing violence. Gary ministers are invited to a "Stop the Violence" training on Monday, July 16 at 555 Polk St. at 11:00a.m. The program will talk about communicating with citizens about non-violence, and after being trained, ministers and members of their congregation can participate in a “Street Ministry” program where they will gather on street corners and other public places to encourage passersby to remain peaceful. The initiative will begin next Friday July 20th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and continue thru the summer.
