2 men are dead due to blunt force trauma after a 2 vehicle crash on the I-90 Indiana Toll Road this morning. LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan says 51 year old Daniel J. Miller, of Heston, Indiana, a 16 year veteran of the Indiana Toll Road’s Maintenance Department, was pronounced dead at the scene, near mile marker 40, by Holmesville Road, east of the Michigan City exit. Sullivan says Miller was stepping out the passenger side of a parked maintenance vehicle, around 10:30, when he was struck by a westbound S-U-V. State Police report the driver of the S-U-V, a 78 year man from Coldwater, Michigan, and Cape Coral, Florida, was pinned in and had to be extracted by the Westville Fire Department, and was airlifted to a Sound Bend hospital where he later died. State Police say the driver of the vehicle Miller was in, a 49 year old LaPorte man, and 12 year employee of the Toll Road, was taken to St. Anthony's in Michigan City for non-life threatening injuries. Authorities say they received a report about an erratic driver, speeding on the westbound toll right right before the incident occurred, and that the maintenance vehicle had active warning lights on and that there was also signage behind it warning westbound traffic of worker's ahead. State Police say the westbound toll road was closed for approximately two hours.
