Shelters & Rescues and Wish Lists

Want to make a donation to a local animal shelter but you aren't sure where to go?

Many of our local animal shelters continuously run out of supplies that they need to care for their sheltered animals. These supplies are much more then just food and litter; they also include towels, detergent, trash bags, hand sanitizer, etc. Our "Shelters and Wish Lists" will provide a place to go to find out what shelters need and how to drop off your donations. Please help to save an animal, do what you can to help your local animal shelters!

The list is in alphabetical order -- scroll through and feel free to print out these wish lists to take with you when you shop.

American Greyhound

American Greyhound has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of retired racers we are able to rescue and place into permanent homes in the last 6 months.  Through the end of October, we have rescued almost 130 dogs from race tracks across the the United States. Our prison partnership with Second Chance at Life has also seen a steady growth to 9 dogs in the prison at all times and those coming off the prison moving into adoptive homes quickly. As a result of this fantastic growth, we are looking for more people who want to be a part of this burgeoning organization.  We can always use your help, and maybe some your skills are exactly what we need!  A few of the positions we would like to see filled are:

-Mentoring-  Mentors would help our adoptive families with problems that arise with their hounds. Maybe you’ve experienced some of these issues with your hound, and now are able to pass your knowledge on to someone else.

-Helping to run meet and greets- Most of you probably first laid eyes on your long legged friend at one of these meet and greets. Whether it was at a local Petco store or one of the many fairs and festivals American greyhound has had a presence at over the years, they are all pretty much the same…getting these wonderful animals out into the public eye.  We have all the supplies you need and our event coordinator, Melissa Wenglarz, can get you set up on the schedule to run your own, once you feel confident to do so.

If you are interested in any of these positions, give Jeff Coggins a call at (219)771-0892 or e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Fried’s Cat Shelter (pronounced “freeds”)
509 Highway 212
Michigan City, IN

Ways to help:
-Donations of new and gently used items to be sold in our gift shop are always appreciated. All proceeds go to the shelter.
-Donations of  cat food, litter, cleaning supplies, paper towels, paper plates, dish soap,  laundry detergent, etc. always helps.
-You can become a shelter volunteer.  We are always happy to have some extra helping hands available for cleaning the shelter or grooming the cats.
-We also encourage visitors, just playing with the cats lets them know they are loved!
-Adopt a less fortunate feline.  There's always a wide variety of cats to choose from at Fried's.
-Participate in our "Sponsor a Kitty Program".  In this way you help provide necessary funds for a cat in need. (See our Sponsor page for more information.)
-Ask your employer whether or not they have a "matching gift program".  Your donation can actually be doubled in this situation.
-A willed benevolence can help Fried's.  Also, you can make accommodations for your cats in your Will at Fried's Cat Shelter to help continue with their care when you are no longer able to.

Desperate need -- small and large litter pans (roughly 300 cats in residence) -- plus gas cards for animal transportation vehicles for taking animals to vet appointments

Donate to "Traveler's Fund"
Named after a rescued pit bull terrier named Traveler, who was found under a trailer after Hurricane Katrina and transferred to the Calumet Area shelter, the fund helps animals with special needs. "Traveler" passed away in February 2007. Traveler had become a warm, welcoming presence at the Animal Ark Vet Clinic in Chicago, even providing blood for dogs who needed transfusions. HSCA established Traveler's Fund through the generosity of a Chicago Canine Rescue Volunteer. "Scooter", a stray dog who recently came to HSCA with a broken back, is being evaluated by veterinarians in Chicago thanks to contributions to Traveler's Fund.

Liquid Detergent
Liquid laundry detergent (any brand) for washing blankets and toys for the animals.

Jasper County Animal Shelter and Control
2430 West Clark St
Rensselaer, IN 47978

Jasper County Animal Shelter started in November of 1998 and is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit shelter. We are County funded, but if you're an animal lover unable to adopt, you are not left out!

We accept donations. Items needed are dog food, cat food, bleach, laundry detergent, cat litter, treats and toys for dogs and cats, old blankets, towels, wash clothes , stuffed animals etc.,spray bottles, dog houses, and dog and cat food and water bowls. We also accept monetary donations.

Of course most important is you, just stopping by and showing some of our animals some affection and attention. We do not have the necessary space to become a no-kill organization at this point.

One of our most important goals is to develop and create a successful low cost spay/neuter assistance program for our community. We do have South Suburban Humane

Society doing low cost spay and neuter once a month call the shelter for details and get put on the list we have to have 15 animals a month or service might be taken away. They do dog and cats. Call now 219- 866- 5756.

We are looking for veterinarians who are interested in helping with this project. Any other groups and indivduals who are able to provide any ideas and helpful information that would assist us in this effort are encouraged. Please let us know your ideas, thoughts, and suggestions to help us offer such a program.

LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter
2855 West SR 2 (next to the Fairgrounds)
LaPorte, IN 46350

We provide animal control services for all unincorporated areas of La Porte County, and we also operate the county animal shelter. We are dedicated to citizen safety,

animal rescue, and encouraging responsible pet ownership through education and reduced-cost spay/neuter vouchers. We enforce municipal ordinances and laws governing animal control and protection and provide a safe and caring environment for stray animals in need. While our primary goal is to reunite lost pets with their owners, we are also committed to finding responsible, loving homes for as many animals as possible.

Last Chance Rescue
Schererville, IN

Last Chance Rescue, Inc., is a no-kill, cage-less animal rescue and refuge in Northwest Indiana. One of our goals is to match our many loving animals with equally loving and responsible adopters. We also strive to help the animals considered "not adoptable" due to age or physical or behavioral issues. We work to socialize, rehabilitate and regain the trust of animals who have been abused or injured.

We believe that everyone deserves a chance and that healthy animals should not be euthanized simply because they are older or have physical or behvioral issues.

We are devoted to animal rescue and are committed to reducing pet overpopulation and educating the public about the importance of spaying and neutering. We promote and support prevention of cruelty to all animals. If you are interested in adopting any of the wonderful animals at Last Chance, please contact us.

We need volunteers!
Would you like to make a difference? Last Chance Rescue desperately needs volunteers who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help clean the cat rooms and dog runs.We have limited funds, so it is difficult to hire cleaners when we have animals who need medical attention and spaying and neutering. So, if you have a strong back--and can lift and bend and scoop and clean one day a week--or even a few days each month--WE NEED YOU!

We need foster caretakers!
If you cannot clean, but would like to help in another way, please consider the rewarding job of fostering a dog or cat. As a foster mom or dad, we ask that you be willing to house a dog or cat until they have found a permanent adoptive home. We will provide food and medical care--you provide the love!

Our Wish List
Clean and gently used blankets and comforters, sheets, cushions, pillows
New carpet remnants
Cat trees or perches in good condition
Dog houses in good condition
Loveseats, benches, coffee and end tables
Pet food dishes
Dish soap, laundry detergent, bleach
Paper towels

No food or litter, please. To keep our animals healthy, we feed a single brand of good quality food. Thank you for your help!
If you are able to help by donating items to our Wish List, or by being a foster caretaker or volunteer, please contact Cherie at (219) 677-2961.
